When we think of feeling grounded, we often think of being calm, steady, and rooted—like a tree with strong roots that can weather any storm. Herbs can help us cultivate that same steadiness in our bodies and minds.
Certain plants, especially those with earthy, calming properties, are powerful allies in helping us feel more present and less scattered. As an herbalist, I often turn to grounding herbs when someone is dealing with anxiety, overwhelm, or just needs help reconnecting with the body.
The Best Grounding Herbs
Here are a few of my favorite herbs for calming the nervous system and grounding energy:
- Ashwagandha – An adaptogen that helps regulate cortisol and support the adrenals. Great for those feeling wired and tired.
- Tulsi (Holy Basil) – Uplifting yet centering, this herb calms the mind while offering gentle energy.
- Chamomile – A classic nervine that soothes the gut and the nerves. Especially helpful before bed.
- Reishi Mushroom – Not technically an herb, but an excellent grounding tonic for immune and nervous system support.
- Skullcap – For when the mind won’t stop racing. Skullcap helps settle excess mental energy and promotes restful sleep.
Each of these herbs works in harmony with the body to support balance—not just in the moment, but over time.
How to Use Grounding Herbs
- Teas: A nightly chamomile + tulsi blend can work wonders
- Tinctures: A dropperful of ashwagandha or reishi in the morning to start your day centered
- Powders: Mix reishi or ashwagandha into warm plant milk with cinnamon for a grounding tonic
- Ritual Baths: Add chamomile or tulsi to a muslin bag and soak it in your bathwater
A Slower Way
Herbs don’t force—they invite. They don’t sedate or numb, but rather offer nourishment and support, helping the body remember what it already knows: how to return to center.
Taking herbs isn’t just about symptoms—it’s about relationship. The more we slow down and get to know these plants, the more we let them ground us, in every sense of the word.
